Kwahu, Kachina by Christopher Pardell, Legends Kachina Dancers Native American Collection Limited to 2,500 pc's. Issued June 1992.

Color brochure with all the stories will accompany the collection.

A true symbol of the Hopi and Zuni spiritual life, Kachinas are believed to be supernatural beings with vast powers to confer prosperity in the form of abundant harvest. Living part of the year disembodied spirits in their own land, they leave their homes and travel to the world of mortals upon the arrival of the winter solstice. Taking up residence within the bodies of men, they remain there until the Niman Kachina festival in July.

KWA'HU
All the white-cloud eagles
Lift me up with your wings
Lift me high over the world . . .
-- Santo Domingo prayer-song

In the time before time, the birds of prey -- who fly high above the world and have the wisdom to understand everything they see -- carried the ancestors of the Hopi out from the Underworld and taught them the mysteries of life. ever since, Hopi prayers have been carried aloft on the feathers of eagles. During the night ceremonies of early March, the Eagle Kachinas dance, beautifully evoking the soaring and swooping motions of eagles' flight. Through these dances the Hopi eloquently express their hope that many eagles will be hatched that season in their sacred nests on the sheer cliff walls of the mesas, so that there will be many eagles to carry their words upwards to the gods.
