In May 1864, three years into the Civil War J.E.B. Stuard gave orders for his men to circle around Seridan's column and ride to defend the city of Richmond. Stuart's wife, Flora, and their two children, were staying nearby at a plantation near Beaver Dam Station and he calculated he had time for a short visit with them. Stuart rode into the plantation that fateful morning of May 10, Flora rushed out to greet him. He embraced her and they talked privately for a few minutes. He kissed her one last time and returned to lead his men toward Richmond. Just one day later when Stuart was shot at Battle of Yellow Tavern, word was sent to Flora, and at dusk on May 12, Stuart uttered, "I would like to see my wife." A few hours later, the brave cavalier drew his last breath with Flora still four hours away. His spontaneous visit two days earlier had ended up being Jeb's final farewell to his beloved Flora.
