Young, pretentious and controversial, George Armstrong Custer compiled an outstanding war record. He fought in virtually every battle of the Civil War for the Union's Army of the Potomac from First Bull Run until Lee's surrender at Appomattox. In 1862, General Alfred Pleasanton, chief of the revitalized Federal Cavalry, was so impressed with Custer's ability and dash that he promoted him from captain to brigadier general. George A. Custer, at 23, became the youngest officer in the union army to reach general's rank.
Custer once again distinguished himself as a heroic leader at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia. At the battle's end, Custer took Generals Richard S. Ewell, George Washington, Curtis Lee, Joseph Kershaw and James P. Simms prisoner. In all, over seven thousand men were captured, the largest group capture of any single battle during the war.
In October 1864, Custer was promoted to major general of the Volunteers for his valor at Cedar Creek. His greatest Civil War triumph however, was his relentless pursuit of Lee's retreating army in April 1865 when he accepted the Confederate truce flag.
In contrast to his glowing Civil War victories, his postwar campaigns on the plains ended in the fatal 1876 ambush at the Little Big Horne at the hands of the combined Sioux armies under the leadership of Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse
